As she glanced over the room she knew the crumpled paper and tinsel meant that it was all over again for another year.  Family had travelled miles, flying over oceans to gather for these festive moments.  How had life become so busy that it took Christmas to bring everyone back together?  Her brothers and sisters all had their own families now, everyone living their own separate lives – countries apart; phone calls the only perceptible line of connection between them all.  How different their lives were now…

Until next year she thought, as a single tear escaped and fell…

  1. Truth in every word. Siblings and children move away getting busy with their own lives only to get together once a year on Christmas. And when they leave with the holidays ending, sadness inevitably seeps in.

    This is such a well written piece that tugs at the heart strings. It is sad that families do drift and sometimes not because of distance. Life is busy and busy gets in the way. Thank goodness for technology to ease the situation!
