Continuing on with the theme of leadership…..the next thing you must lead with is honesty. If people do not trust you, then you will have a very difficult time getting anywhere. Honesty is key to everything. Every relationship is based on it.
When trust is lost for any reason, it can take a very long time for it to be rebuilt, if at all. Therefore it is so important for leaders to be transparent with their decisions and for others to believe in the abilities of their leaders. If they trust you they won’t find it necessary to always question every decision that you make, they will know and believe that what you are doing is always in their best interest.
When you are new, however. For instance, like I am, a new headteacher in a new school, this trust has to be earned. Before people can trust in you, they have to see the decisions you make and understand where you put them in your decisions. Over time, if you have led with integrity and people know that you are who you say you are, colleagues will begin to invest in you and trust will develop.
People watch everything you do. They watch how you treat others when they are or aren’t there, how you talk about people to their face and to other people, every little move…..
As I say to the children, integrity is about how you are when people don’t see you…….You can’t pretend to be someone you aren’t. You either have integrity or you don’t.
Think about it……
